Communion Liturgy based on “A New Creed” of The United Church of Canada

*Hymn: Let Us Build a House More Voices 1
One: God is with you!
All: And also with you!
One: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them up to God.
One: Let us give thanks to God, our God.
All: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
One: It is truly right that we thank you,
and we praise you, God Most Holy,
Creator of All! For…
All: We are not alone,
we live in your world!

One: We live in your world,
we live in your creation –
in all of its wonder,
in all of its life.
All: We believe in You,
who has created and is creating!

One: In your love, with your Word, by your Spirit,
you brought all things into being.
In your love, with your Word, by your Spirit,
you bring all things into being.
With that creation, you live,
entangled and entwined,
with all people, all places, all things.
All: We believe in You,
who has come in Jesus,
the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new.

One: In so many ways,
in so many times and places,
you spoke your words,
calling us into deeper covenant with you.
Calling us back into your love.
Through prophets and priests,
grandparents and children,
teachers and preachers and
voices in the wilderness,
you called us, again and again.
And then, in Jesus – the Word made Flesh –
we encountered you in a new way.
In his love, through his life,
his death and his resurrection,
Jesus, Christ, brought all creation,
all of us,
into right relationship with you,
again and forever.
All: We believe in You,
who works in us, and others,
by the Spirit.

One: Spirit of the Creator,
Spirit of the Christ,
Holy Spirit, Love Divine –
you live in us and with us,
turning our lives and your world
upside down –
with hope, with wonder, with challenge,
with love!
All: We trust in You, our God! Alleluia!
One: We do trust in You. Thanks be!
Because life, even at the best of times,
can be chaotic.
At the most difficult times,
the ones when we can’t understand
what’s around the corner,
when we don’t know what to do,
or where to go,
or how to be,
all we can do is trust in You.
So we trust in your Love,
shown over and over again,
throughout all time, all space.
All: You call us to be the Church.
One: And so, as disciples of Christ,
we live with respect in Creation.
All: Help us to live
with even more respect,
Creator of All.

One: We love and serve others.
All: Help us to love and serve
with all we are,
Christ Jesus.

One: We seek justice and resist evil.
All: Help us to do more than stand and wait.
Help us to act rightly
in the face of wrong,
Holy Spirit.

One: We proclaim Jesus,
All: crucified and risen,
our judge and our hope.

One: On the night that he was taken
to what would be his death,
on a cross,
Jesus gathered with his disciples
for a meal of remembrance,
a meal of hope,
and a meal of challenge.
As the disciples gathered,
he served them, washing their feet.
As the disciples ate,
he taught them,
helping them to understand
what would come.
As the disciples raged and disbelieved,
he loved them,
even knowing he would be betrayed,
even knowing he would be abandoned.
All: And his judgment,
was to love them –
every single one,
no matter what.
That is our hope!

One: He took bread, broke it,
and gave thanks to You,
God of all creation.
Then he gave it to his disciples, saying,
“Take this, all of you, and eat it.
This is my body, given for you.
Each time you eat bread, remember me.”
All: In life, in death, in life-beyond-death
One: He took wine, poured it,
and gave thanks to you,
God of all Creation,
Then he gave it to his disciples, saying,
“Take this, all of you, and drink it.
This is my promise, in my life’s blood,
that sins are forgiven.
Each time you drink wine, remember me.”
All: God is with us. We are not alone!
One: Holy God, send your Spirit upon
this bread, this cup,
and all who are gathered,
that they, and we, might truly be
the body and blood of Jesus Christ,
alive in your creation!
All: Thanks be to God.
Thanks be to God!

One: You, God, are our Mother.
You, God, are…
All: Our Father, who art in heaven…

One: The gifts of God, for the people of God!
All: Thanks be to God!
One: Come, for the table is prepared,
and our cup overflows.
All: Alleluia!

Communion is shared.

Prayer after Communion:
All: For the bread we have eaten,
for the wine we have tasted,
to the life we have received,
thank you God!
Help us to be your church,
in the days, weeks and years to come,
filled and refreshed
by your constant love.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

  1. Having completed your survey (and having sent an e-mail) today I returned to your website to look specifically at the prayer for communion based on the United Church creed. I will use it the next time I have opportunity. This year I have (in retirement) led an inquiring and committed group of 12 youth in a confirmation class. I decided to ask them to 1) read a gospel of their choice -twice – once on their own, once with one other person. This they have done and their questions and comments have been great. 2) memorize the new creed. (which they have done) Next class I will use this prayer as we talk about sacraments. table inclusiveness, table commissioning. Thankyou, Richard, I will be checking out more of your resources. Blessings.

  2. I came in to your site to get the results of your survey and am going to use your Communion Liturgy on June 12th when we are having an outside service in Galahad Alberta. I am the ministry personnel on the Forestburg Pastoral Charge. Thanks.
    Blessings on your day. Shalom.
